Plain-English definitions of the certifications, tickets, equipment and offshore abbreviations used in rope access recruitment — from IRATA levels and BOSIET to GWO, NDT, RAMS and FIFO. Whether you're hiring a crew or building a career, this is the language of the trade, explained.

Certification

Certification & governing bodies

IRATA
Industrial Rope Access Trade Association — the global governing body for industrial rope access. It sets training and safety standards and operates a three-level certification recognised in more than 70 countries.
SPRAT
Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians — the North American rope access certification body. Recognised mainly in the US and Canada; IRATA is the more widely accepted standard internationally.
IRATA Level 1
Entry-level rope access technician. Works under the supervision of a Level 3, performs basic manoeuvres and assists with rigging. Requires a 4–5 day course and an independent assessment; no prior experience needed.
IRATA Level 2
Experienced rope access technician who can rig and de-rig, perform advanced rescues and supervise Level 1s on rope. Requires 1,000 logged hours and 12 months as a Level 1.
IRATA Level 3
Rope access safety supervisor — mandatory on every IRATA worksite. Owns the method statement, risk assessment and rescue plan. Requires 1,000 logged hours and 12 months as a Level 2, plus a valid first-aid certificate.
TACS
IRATA's Training, Assessment and Certification Scheme — the document that defines the syllabus, hours and assessment standards for each IRATA level.
ICOP
IRATA International Code of Practice — the reference document setting out safe systems of work for industrial rope access.
Logbook
The technician's official record of logged rope-access hours and tasks. Used to progress between levels and to evidence currency; hours must support the level a technician claims.
Revalidation
The reassessment required to keep certification current. IRATA certificates are valid for three years, after which the technician must be re-assessed.
TechConnect
IRATA's online membership and technician-management system, used by member companies to manage training and certification records.

Offshore Tickets

Offshore & safety training

BOSIET
Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training — the OPITO-standard course (typically 3 days) mandatory to work offshore in oil and gas. Covers helicopter escape, sea survival, firefighting and first aid. No valid BOSIET means no permit to board.
FOET
Further Offshore Emergency Training — the refresher for BOSIET, required to keep offshore certification current (usually every four years).
HUET
Helicopter Underwater Escape Training — training to escape a ditched, capsized helicopter. Delivered as part of BOSIET for offshore workers.
OPITO
The organisation that sets global offshore oil-and-gas safety training standards, including BOSIET and FOET, and maintains the industry's competence records.
OGUK / OEUK medical
The offshore fitness-to-work medical taken to the UK offshore energy standard. OGUK (Oil & Gas UK) was renamed OEUK (Offshore Energies UK); a valid offshore medical is required to work offshore.
GWO
Global Wind Organisation — sets the safety training standards for the wind industry. Its Basic Safety Training pairs with IRATA for offshore and onshore wind rope-access work.
GWO BST
GWO Basic Safety Training — the standard wind-industry safety package: first aid, manual handling, fire awareness, working at heights, and sea survival for offshore.
WINDA
The Global Wind Organisation's online database that records a technician's GWO training, used by employers to verify wind-industry safety certification.

Trades

Trade & inspection skills

NDT
Non-Destructive Testing — inspection methods that detect flaws in a structure without damaging it. A common trade ticket paired with rope access on inspection contracts.
UT / UTG
Ultrasonic Testing (and Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging) — an NDT method that uses high-frequency sound to detect internal flaws and measure remaining wall thickness.
MT
Magnetic Particle Testing — an NDT method for detecting surface and near-surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials.
PT
Dye Penetrant Testing — an NDT method that reveals surface-breaking defects using a coloured or fluorescent penetrant.
ECT
Eddy Current Testing — an NDT method using electromagnetic induction to find surface and sub-surface flaws, common on welds and heat-exchanger tubes.
PAUT / TOFD
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing and Time-of-Flight Diffraction — advanced ultrasonic techniques used for detailed weld and corrosion inspection.
Blade repair
Composite repair and inspection of wind-turbine blades, most often performed via rope access and typically requiring combined IRATA and GWO certification.

On Rope

Equipment & technique

Twin-rope system
The core rope access safety principle: two independently anchored ropes — a working line and a backup safety line — used on every job so no single failure can drop the technician.
Working line
The primary rope a technician ascends, descends and positions on using a descender or ascender.
Safety line (backup line)
The second, independently anchored rope that arrests a fall if the working line or main device fails.
Descender
A mechanical device fitted to the working line that allows controlled descent and hands-free positioning.
Back-up device
A fall-arrest device that runs on the safety line and locks onto the rope if the technician falls.
Deviation
A redirect that pulls the rope line to one side to avoid an obstacle or edge, without taking the technician's full weight.
Re-anchor (rebelay)
An intermediate anchor that restarts the rope line lower down, used to route around obstructions or protect the rope from an edge.
Pick-off rescue
A rescue in which a rescue-capable technician reaches a casualty, transfers them onto the rescuer's system and lowers them to safety. Rescue capability must be on site before anyone goes on rope.

On Site

Work, safety documents & deployment

RAMS
Risk Assessment and Method Statement — the safety documentation prepared before work starts, describing the hazards, controls and step-by-step safe procedure. A Level 3 is responsible for it.
Method statement
The step-by-step procedure for carrying out a task safely, including the rescue plan. Part of RAMS.
Permit to work
Formal, documented authorisation from the site operator to carry out specific work on an asset, often a precondition for rope access on live facilities.
WAH
Work at Height — any work where a person could fall a distance liable to cause injury. Rope access is one controlled method of working at height.
FIFO
Fly-In Fly-Out — a work pattern where technicians fly to a remote or offshore site for a fixed rotation and fly home for the off period.
Rotation
The on/off work cycle of a deployment, such as 2-weeks-on/2-weeks-off onshore or 42/42 offshore. Because rotations are intermittent, a day rate does not annualise cleanly.
Turnaround / shutdown (TAR)
A planned period when a facility stops production for inspection, maintenance and repair. Turnarounds create the sharpest, most time-critical spikes in rope-access demand.
Mobilisation
Everything required to get a technician deployment-ready and on site: credential verification, visa, offshore medical, travel, accommodation and site induction.
Deployment-ready
A technician who is fully verified, compliant and mobilised — certified, medically cleared, ticketed and cleared to work on rope, not just a matching CV.

Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (UK) — govern the examination and safe use of lifting equipment, including rope access gear.
PUWER
Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (UK) — require work equipment to be suitable, maintained and safely used.

What does BOSIET stand for?

BOSIET stands for Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training. It is an OPITO-standard course, usually three days, that is mandatory before working offshore in oil and gas. It covers helicopter underwater escape, sea survival, firefighting and first aid, and is renewed with FOET (Further Offshore Emergency Training), typically every four years.

What is the twin-rope system in rope access?

The twin-rope system is the core safety principle of industrial rope access: every technician works on two independently anchored ropes — a working line for positioning and a separate backup safety line that arrests a fall if the working line or main device fails. On an IRATA site, the Level 3 safety supervisor is responsible for producing and enforcing RAMS.
